Summary

Use after free vulnerability in Windows Hyper-V allows an authorized local attacker to execute arbitrary code with high integrity and confidentiality impact. The vulnerability requires local access and valid credentials to exploit. Microsoft has released patches for all affected Windows versions including Windows 10, Windows 11, Windows Server 2016, 2019, 2022, and 2025.

What this means
What could happen
An attacker with local access to a Hyper-V host could run commands with elevated privileges, potentially allowing them to compromise virtual machines, access sensitive data, or disrupt virtualized services running on the host.
Who's at risk
Organizations running Hyper-V on Windows Server 2016, 2019, 2022, 2025 or on Windows 10/11 client systems should prioritize patching. This affects data center environments, hosted services, and any facility using Microsoft virtualization for OT workloads or supporting systems. The vulnerability poses risk to the availability and integrity of virtualized industrial control systems, SCADA servers, and other critical OT applications running as virtual machines.
How it could be exploited
An attacker with local credentials on a Hyper-V host can exploit a use-after-free memory flaw in the Hyper-V driver to execute arbitrary code. This requires the attacker to already have authenticated local access to the system and trigger the vulnerable code path through the hypervisor interface.
Prerequisites
  • Local user credentials on the Hyper-V host system
  • Access to Hyper-V management interfaces or APIs
  • Windows operating system running Hyper-V role or feature
