Summary

A heap-based buffer overflow in the Windows Win32k kernel graphics component allows an authorized user to escalate their privileges to administrator level. The vulnerability is triggered when a user interacts with attacker-supplied content (such as a malicious link or file), causing the kernel to process malformed data. Successful exploitation grants the attacker administrative privileges on the affected system.

Who's at risk
Any organization running Windows 10 (all versions) or Windows Server (2016, 2019, 2022, 2025) needs to patch. This affects administrative workstations, engineering stations, HMI servers, and domain controllers. Water utilities and electric utilities commonly run SCADA HMI systems on Windows servers; if those systems run any of these Windows versions, they are affected.
How it could be exploited
An attacker sends a crafted message or file to a logged-in user. When the user interacts with it (clicks a link, opens a file, etc.), the Win32k graphics kernel component processes a heap buffer overflow. The attacker can then execute code with the same privileges as the elevated system service, gaining admin rights on the machine.

  • Valid Windows domain or local user account on the target machine
  • User must be logged in and interact with attacker-controlled content (click link, open file, etc.)
  • Network access to reach the machine (but exploitation requires local or domain user credentials)
