Summary
Use-after-free vulnerability in Windows Win32 Kernel Subsystem. An authorized attacker with local access can trigger the flaw to elevate privileges from user to administrator level.
What this means
What could happen
An attacker with a user account on your Windows system can exploit this to gain administrator privileges, allowing them to install malware, access sensitive data, modify system configuration, or interfere with OT applications running on that workstation.
Who's at risk
Organizations running Windows 10, Windows 11, Windows Server 2016, 2019, 2022, or 2025 should apply this patch. Specifically, this affects engineering workstations, HMI servers, data historian systems, and any Windows-based supervisory systems in SCADA or industrial environments. Environments where non-administrators have user accounts are at higher risk.
How it could be exploited
An attacker must already have a valid user account on the Windows system. They run a specially crafted application that triggers the use-after-free condition in the Win32 kernel, causing it to execute their code with administrator rights. From there, they can modify any system file or install persistent malware.
Prerequisites
- Valid user account on the affected Windows system
- Local interactive access or ability to run code locally
- Ability to execute malicious application

HOTFIXApply October 2026 Windows security update to all Windows 10, Windows 11, Windows Server 2016, 2019, 2022, and 2025 systems
Long-term hardening
0/2HARDENINGRestrict local access to workstations and servers. Disable or restrict guest accounts and minimize the number of standard user accounts
HARDENINGImplement Group Policy to disable unnecessary user privileges and enforce principle of least privilege on Windows systems
