Summary
A use-after-free vulnerability in the Windows Win32 Kernel Subsystem allows an authorized local attacker to elevate privileges. This affects multiple versions of Windows 10, Windows 11, Windows Server 2016, 2019, 2022, and 2025 across 32-bit, x64, and ARM64 architectures.
What this means
What could happen
An attacker with local access to a server or workstation could exploit this vulnerability to gain system-level privileges, allowing them to take complete control of the machine and access, modify, or delete critical operational data.
Who's at risk
IT managers operating Windows-based servers and workstations in utility environments, particularly those running Windows Server 2016, 2019, 2022, or 2025, and Windows 10 or 11 systems used for engineering, SCADA, or industrial process monitoring. All system architectures (32-bit, 64-bit, ARM64) are affected.
How it could be exploited
An attacker must first gain local user-level access to the target Windows system (e.g., through compromised credentials, phishing, or a previous vulnerability). They then trigger the use-after-free condition in the Win32 kernel to escalate their privileges from user to system/administrator level.
Prerequisites
- Local user account on the target Windows system
- Ability to execute code with local user privileges
