Summary

A use-after-free vulnerability in the Windows Win32k kernel subsystem allows an authorized local user to elevate privileges to system level. The flaw exists in the kernel graphics subsystem and can be exploited by executing a specially crafted application. The vulnerability affects Windows 10 (all supported versions), Windows 11 (all versions), and Windows Server 2016 through 2025. Microsoft has released patches via the October 2026 security update.

What this means
What could happen
An attacker with a local user account on a Windows server could exploit a use-after-free flaw in the kernel graphics subsystem to run commands with system privileges, potentially compromising your infrastructure management systems or allowing lateral movement to critical OT devices.
Who's at risk
Windows Server 2016, 2019, 2022, and 2025 administrators; Windows 10 users on systems running versions 1607, 1809, 21H2, 22H2, and all Windows 11 versions. This affects infrastructure management workstations, engineering stations, HMI systems running Windows, and any SCADA or ICS support servers using these operating systems.
How it could be exploited
An attacker with a valid local user account (e.g., a contractor account, service account, or compromised employee account) executes a specially crafted application that triggers a use-after-free condition in the Win32k kernel subsystem, causing a memory safety violation that elevates the attacker's privilege level from user to system/administrator.
Prerequisites
  • Local user account on the affected Windows system
  • No elevated privileges required to trigger the vulnerability
  • User must be able to execute applications

HOTFIXApply the October 2026 Windows security update to all affected Windows 10 and Windows Server systems
HOTFIXVerify installations by checking that Build versions match the fixed versions listed (e.g., Build 10.0.19045.7807 for Windows 10 Version 22H2)
Long-term hardening
0/3
HARDENINGRestrict local user account creation and enforce strong access controls; disable unnecessary local user accounts on servers
HARDENINGImplement application whitelisting on Windows servers to prevent execution of unauthorized code
HARDENINGEnable Windows Defender Credential Guard on supported systems to add an extra layer of kernel protection
