Summary

A use-after-free vulnerability in Windows Win32K kernel subsystem allows a locally authenticated user to escalate privileges to administrator or system level. The vulnerability affects Windows 11 (versions 24H2, 25H2, 26H1, 26H2, all architectures) and Windows Server 2025. Microsoft has released patches in the October 2026 security update.

What this means
What could happen
A user with local access to a Windows system could exploit this vulnerability to gain administrator or system-level privileges, potentially allowing them to modify industrial control software, disable safety systems, or take full control of OT workstations and servers running critical operations.
Who's at risk
OT organizations using Windows 11 or Windows Server 2025 systems as engineering workstations, HMI servers, or data historians. This includes water utilities, electric utilities, and other critical infrastructure using Windows-based SCADA, DCS, or engineering support systems.
How it could be exploited
An attacker must first gain local access to a Windows system (either through physical access, compromised credentials, or another vulnerability). Once logged in, they can trigger the use-after-free condition in Win32K to escalate from their current user privilege level to system or administrator privileges. This could then be used to modify or disable OT software, alter process parameters, or compromise the integrity of engineering workstations.
Prerequisites
  • Local user account on Windows system
  • Ability to execute code or interact with the graphical interface as a low-privileged user
Low complexity exploitationRequires local access (reduces but does not eliminate risk)Affects Windows systems commonly used in OT environments
Exploitability
Unlikely to be exploited — EPSS score 0.3%
