Summary
A use-after-free vulnerability in Windows kernel-mode drivers allows an authorized local user to escalate privileges to system level. The vulnerability affects Windows 10 (versions 1607, 1809, 21H2, 22H2), Windows 11 (versions 23H2, 24H2, 25H2, 26H1, 26H2), Windows Server 2016, 2019, 2022, and 2025 across 32-bit, x64, and ARM64 architectures. Microsoft has released patches via the October 2026 security update.
What this means
What could happen
An attacker with local access to an engineering workstation or HMI server running affected Windows versions could escalate privileges to system level, potentially gaining control over industrial control software and process commands.
Who's at risk
Engineering workstations, HMI servers, and edge devices running Windows 10, Windows 11, Windows Server 2016, 2019, 2022, or 2025 that are used for industrial process monitoring or control. This affects organizations in water, electric, manufacturing, and other utilities that rely on Windows-based supervisory systems.
How it could be exploited
An attacker must first gain local access to a Windows system (either through phishing, physical access, or another initial compromise). Once local, they exploit a use-after-free vulnerability in a kernel-mode driver to escalate privileges from standard user to system/administrator level, allowing them to modify or execute commands affecting connected OT systems.
Prerequisites
- Local access to the affected Windows system
- Ability to execute code or run malicious code with standard user privileges
- Affected kernel-mode driver must be loaded
Local privilege escalation requiredRequires initial local accessActive exploitation expected per Microsoft assessmentAffects multiple Windows versions and architecturesCould enable unauthorized process control if combined with other vulnerabilities

Long-term hardening
0/3HARDENINGRestrict physical and remote access to engineering workstations and HMI servers to authorized personnel only
HARDENINGImplement endpoint detection and response (EDR) monitoring on Windows systems running industrial software to detect privilege escalation attempts
HARDENINGDisable unnecessary kernel drivers not required for OT operations to reduce attack surface
